February 3 – 5K Nooner

Keep CalmI didn’t walk this morning because it was too cold and I knew that I wouldn’t have time to walk this evening after work due to another commitment. My only choice was to walk at noon. It was cold and windy (what a surprise), but I did it anyway. I’d never walked more than a quarter mile from my office, but today I explored and got my 5K done in the process. I love walking outside. I’ve found and seen all kinds of interesting things on my walks, some of which I’ve written about and some I spare you the details.

Today’s 5K was an exploration and a bit of a miscalculation on my part. I had a loose plan based on a path that I’ve scoped out for a couple of months now. This was the execution day for the 5K-at-work plan. Down the street from where I work is a regular neighborhood, so I headed for that area because it seemed to be very walkable. Unfortunately, as I drew closer, I realized that a construction site was between me and the neighborhood. I walked around a bit near the neighborhood, came out and walked back toward my office and a few twists, turns, and detours later; I finished. I’m glad I took the time to do it at work and got it done during a time where I’d be sitting around eating.

Walking there at noon made me realize that I need a better plan for my 5Ks because this will come up again. I searched a bit for an easy way to find a good walking path, without crossing major roads, that is also the correct distance for the 5K. I discovered the PlotARoute website that allows you to draw out a path as it simultaneously measures it. Perfect solution!

I’ll let you know how mine turns out as I use it. In the meantime, keep walking, let us know how you’re doing on your walks. And follow us on Twitter: @kenhess and follow Melissa who walked at the big mall today on Instagram at: redhatrunner.
