February 3 – 5K Nooner

Keep CalmI didn’t walk this morning because it was too cold and I knew that I wouldn’t have time to walk this evening after work due to another commitment. My only choice was to walk at noon. It was cold and windy (what a surprise), but I did it anyway. I’d never walked more than a quarter mile from my office, but today I explored and got my 5K done in the process. I love walking outside. I’ve found and seen all kinds of interesting things on my walks, some of which I’ve written about and some I spare you the details.

Today’s 5K was an exploration and a bit of a miscalculation on my part. I had a loose plan based on a path that I’ve scoped out for a couple of months now. This was the execution day for the 5K-at-work plan. Down the street from where I work is a regular neighborhood, so I headed for that area because it seemed to be very walkable. Unfortunately, as I drew closer, I realized that a construction site was between me and the neighborhood. I walked around a bit near the neighborhood, came out and walked back toward my office and a few twists, turns, and detours later; I finished. I’m glad I took the time to do it at work and got it done during a time where I’d be sitting around eating.

Walking there at noon made me realize that I need a better plan for my 5Ks because this will come up again. I searched a bit for an easy way to find a good walking path, without crossing major roads, that is also the correct distance for the 5K. I discovered the PlotARoute website that allows you to draw out a path as it simultaneously measures it. Perfect solution!

I’ll let you know how mine turns out as I use it. In the meantime, keep walking, let us know how you’re doing on your walks. And follow us on Twitter: @kenhess and follow Melissa who walked at the big mall today on Instagram at: redhatrunner.

February 2 – The Shadow Knows

When you run, jog, or walk, please pay attention to your surroundings.

The Shadow KnowsBecause of a commitment tonight, I had to get up early this morning and start my 5K by 6 AM. I wasn’t thrilled with the prospect of an early morning 5K, but I did it anyway. As it turned out, I was quite happy with the results.  It was windy and cold, but it didn’t bother me as much as it has later today. I think the mercury has progressively moved downward as the day has worn on, so I’m glad it’s out of the way.

Although I started when it was pretty dark outside, it was cloudy. It’s been cloudy all day, so no shadows here. That Pennsylvania rodent should move to Oklahoma. Or perhaps he shouldn’t because someone might use him to predict earthquakes, tornadoes, ice storms, or windy conditions.

My 5K went pretty fast–just over 40 minutes and I guess I was on autopilot for some of it because I don’t remember a lot of the course that I ran. It’s just as well that I don’t remember it. Who wants to relive 40+ minutes of grunting, sweating, and huffing for the rest of the day? I don’t.

I used to go to the gym and workout in the mornings at 5:30 AM and I enjoyed that, so who knows, the early morning 5K might become a thing for me.

When you run, jog, or walk, please pay attention to your surroundings. It’s nice to listen to music, NPR, or your own mix tapes when you’re out, but don’t allow yourself too much distraction, since I’m fairly certain that’s how people get hit by cars. Stay safe out there.

February 1 – A Groundhog Day Eve 5K

I’m not a huge fan of February because I’m not really sure how to pronounce February.

FebruaryYesterday I lamented that January had 31 days, meaning that I wished that my first month of 5Ks had been shorter by, I don’t know…maybe a day, I guess. Melissa replied, “There are 365 days in a year, so what does it matter?” True, but the point is that a shorter month would mean that we’d surpassed a milestone–a whole month of 5Ks. It doesn’t matter now, of course, but it mattered a couple of days ago.

Today is February 1st. I’m not a huge fan of February because I’m not really sure how to pronounce February. There are two competing pronunciations and I’ve always favored the Feb-yoo-ary version, while Melissa favors, Feb-roo-ary. I can’t bring myself to say it that way, although it’s probably the more correct one. I mean, come on, when it’s followed by March, April, May, June, and July, why does February have to be so difficult? February is the Wednesday of months. It’s annoying and weird.

Melissa and I walked together today in the chilly wind. When the wind hit us in the face, it was pretty rough to take. I’m not a fan of the wind, especially cold wind. It was literally breathtaking and not in a good way. We finally finished up and put another 5K into the history book or blog.

Our time was somewhere between competitive and love walk, which means that we weren’t hurried or trying to be competitive. In plain English, it was close to an hour for the 5K walk today. Such is life.

Remember to keep walking. Don’t let the weather or any other issues keep you from that daily 5K. It does get easier. To me, the 5K isn’t so much of a physical challenge anymore but has become more of a time challenge. I know that as soon as I hit the door, I can’t sit down and relax. I have to change clothes, get motivated, stretch, and then hit the bricks.
